COMMON HOUSEHOLD PESTS

MOSQUITOES

They live outdoors and may come indoors at times. They often seek shelter in enclosed spaces and lay their eggs in standing water.  They are most famously known for transmitting malaria and other diseases such as: yellow fever and the Zika Virus.

MICE

Colors vary from light brown to dark gray. They average in size from 2 1/2 - 3 3/4" long. They are found throughout the United States. Mice eat almost any human food but prefer grain based products. 

COCKROACHES

These critters are active at night and forage for food and water. They eat all types of human and pet food. The size of a German cockroach ranges from 1/2" to 5/8" inches long and are mostly light brown. They carry bacteria and viruses and cause allergic reactions. 

SPIDERS

There are many different types of spiders in our area ranging from 3/8" - 3/4" long. They can be found outdoors, as well as indoors. They can feed on a variety of insects. Some spiders can be beneficial. 

HOUSE FLY

Gray to black in color. Approximately a quarter inch in length. They can live both indoors and outdoors. They are also known to spread hundreds of pathogens. 

DRAIN FLY

Brown and black in color. They have a furry, moth-like appearance. About 1/6" - 1/4" in length. They prefer wet and moist areas, around and in sinks and drains. 

FRUIT FLY

Black and brown color, with red eyes. Approximately 1/8th inches in length. Primarily a nuisance pest. 

TERMITES

They can do over 5 billion dollars of damage per year in the United States. There are three castes of termites with physical differences: reproductive, workers, and soldiers. Several telltale signs of infestation are the presence of mud tubes and seeing the swarmer termite.

WASP

Brownish-yellow markings, some can have reddish markings. They can be 5/8" to 3/4" length. They like to eat nectar and other insects. Most are not aggressive by nature, but will sting if they are disturbed or if their nest is threatened. 

ANTS

There are many types of ants and they come in different sizes and colors. When an ant finds food, it lays a scent (pheromone) trail to its nest for other workers to follow. Feeds on anything, especially if sweet. 

FLEAS

It feeds on blood of a host for reproduction. It remains embedded with the host until death. They are less than 1/4" with a dark brown appearance. Females can lay 400-800 eggs throughout their life.  

BED BUG

Bed bugs are insects that feed on human blood, usually at night. Their bites can result in a number of health impacts including skin rashes.
